Surrounded by mountains, there is a hidden village, isolated and independent. The village was built about 300 years ago. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1995.

The houses here are very characteristic, not fixed by a single nail, and the house is warm in winter and cool in summer. The thatch covering the roof is replaced every 40 years, and only 23 houses here are gassho-zukuri style buildings.
